"Province Selling Wooden Penises."
REGINA -- Saskatchewan's Education Department is trying to unload close
to 1,000 wooden penises.
The teaching aids were supposed to be part of a course on relationships
that included showing Grade 9 students the proper way to use a condom,
but teachers felt the wooden penises were not a good idea.
Craig Dotson, deputy minister of education, said the "supplementary
demonstrators" were dropped from the curriculum about six months ago.
He said the department is hoping to return them to the supplier or sell
them.
So far the department has sold only 46, mostly to public health
agencies.
The matter was the target of some joking by Progressive Conservative Ben
Heppner, the Education critic.
"Maybe we can give them to the provincial parks for firewood so the
campers could have a big weenie roast," Mr. Heppner suggested in the
legislature yesterday.
